Mullet Preservation Society moves annual rally to late
December
By Jack Pyott
Every August since the
mid-1990s, thousands of mullet aficionados from around the world have gathered
annually in Martinsville, Indiana for an annual rally to celebrate and preserve
the heritage of the hairstyle many have worn for over two decades.
This year, Mullet
Preservation Society (MPS) organizers decided to move their Mullet Madness
rally to late December in hopes of drawing a larger crowd. From now on, the
event will be held December 27-30.
“We couldn’t keep having
the rally in August and expect to get much bigger. A large number of mullet
wearers were skipping our get-together to head out to South Dakota for the
Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. This should alleviate that problem and help draw more
people to Martinsville,” said Cody Frazier, president of the Indiana chapter of
the MPS, “It will also help that NASCAR season is over by then and a lot of
factories shut down for maintenance the last week of December between the
holidays.”
Martinsville, also known
as “Mullet Mecca”, is considered the world capital of this revered hairdo. Over
six-sevenths of the inhabitants in this town of 12,000 wear some form of
mullet.
This small southern
Indiana town will be busting at the seams come late December, when Frazier
expects this year’s meet to be the largest ever.
“We estimate that about
350,000 people will attend this year, double the number from last year. People
come from far and wide to be around their mulleted brothers and sisters. We
even get a lot of Germans and Eastern Europeans, where the Euromullet is very
popular.”
A large delegation from
Hamburg, Germany, the European capital of mulletdom, is expected to attend.
“When the Germans roll up wearing mullets similar to ours, it opens peoples’
eyes to the fact that we are not that different from one another despite being
from different parts of the world. It makes us more tolerant of others. Plus
those dudes know how to party!” added Frazier.
