The Bedford-Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce is proud to
announce the 1st Annual Bedford Arts Fair on December 13. This will
be an event that Bedford hopes will interest art and car aficionados from the
Midwest and the South.
Some of the early entrants for the competition are
displayed as a teaser in this story. At first glance, an educated person might
see this event as a car show and not an art fair. Harry Richard, Chamber of
Commerce President, has a different view. “We see these vehicles as works of
art. No one would put that much time, creativity, and effort into something that
was not meant to inspire others. That is, after all, the whole purpose of art.”
Another reason
for the inaugural event is to put Bedford on the map. “We want to be known for
more than Damon Bailey, limestone, and terrible football teams,” said Mr.
Richard. “We want to be known as a community that supports cultural events and
the arts.” There was an even more imperative reason for Bedford to commission
such an event. “We had to move now,” Harry said, “Because there are about 20
other cities in Indiana that could support this type of event. Hell, just look
at the roads in towns like Rockville, Loogootee, Clarksville, Tell City, among
others. Believe me, we didn’t have anything unique on our roads that would
warrant an art fair. There were many other Indiana Cities capable of having
this type of event.”
