In what Warren Central
fans described as one of the greatest high school football games in Indiana
history, Warren Central defeated Penn 57-7 Saturday in Indianapolis at the RCA
Dome, where the state championships have been played since 1984.
Warren Central built up a
20-0 first quarter lead by rushing for three touchdowns while dominating the
line of scrimmage. Even with this lead extended to 27-0 four seconds into the
second quarter, Warren Central coach Kevin Wright was worried that Penn’s
high-powered offense would take over and control the clock.
“It went down to the
wire. I didn’t really feel like we could relax until about a minute into the
second quarter when we got up 34-0.” said Wright, “They gave us all we wanted
and a lot more. If we weren’t so much bigger, faster, stronger, and more
aggressive than them it would have been even closer. We are lucky to walk away
with this one. It was a great, great game.”
The Warriors went in at
halftime with a 50-0 lead. They scored their final time with 20 seconds left in
the third quarter. It wasn’t until late in the game against Warren Central’s
ninth stringers did Penn score on a three yard run.
“Those damn sophomores
almost let them back in the game. They are running the RCA Dome steps before we
head home!” said Wright.
Warren Central rolled up
575 yards on the ground on 41 carries. They had no passing yards.
Despite the game having
the most lopsided margin of victory in the history of the 5A championship game,
Warren Central fans couldn’t have asked for a more exciting and well-played
game.
Warren Central graduate
Brian Grimm: “This has been the greatest high school football game I have seen
since we won back in 1985. Me and all the other Warren Central folks are
heading over to Broad Ripple to get hammered and burn this mutha down! Go
Warriors!!!”
