Bob Green of Greencastle obsessed with the color green

            By Edward Seelbach, THG Features

Ever since he was a child, Bob Green has been obsessed with the color from which his surname is derived.

For long as he can remember, the 43 year-old engineer has loved all things green.  He usually wears an all-green wardrobe, has painted his Greencastle home green inside and out (which incidentally is located on West Green Street), drives a green Ford Explorer, and even has gone so far as to name his three children after various shades of green (son Forest, age 14, daughters Olive and Kelly, ages 10 and 7).

Why is Green so smitten with green?

“I don’t know really know why,” says Green, a graduate of Tulane University, “It started when I was very young.  I always wanted to color with only green crayons in my coloring books.  When I got older, I guess it became more of an obsession; when I was in high school I started wearing only green clothes and became a fan of the Green Bay Packers.  I took a lot of criticism for it but it didn’t really bother me that much.  There are a lot worse things I could be addicted to, like drugs or alcohol.”

And how does his family deal with everything green?  “My wife has always been very understanding because she knew how I was when she married me.  It has been a bit hard on the kids at times because kids at school say things about me.  I used to want to dress them up in green also, but my wife convinced me that I need to let them make choices for themselves.”

At the urging of his children, Green has been visiting a therapist for the past couple of years in hopes of overcoming his obsession.  Therapy had been largely unsuccessful until a breakthrough a few weeks ago.  “We got a new boxer puppy, and Jean (Paprocki, Bob’s therapist) urged me to choose a name not related to my favorite color, so I named him Pierce Brosnan, after my favorite actor.  Hopefully that is a step in the right direction so I can live a normal life.”

Until then, things will probably continue to be green for Bob Green.
