It was bound to happen sooner or later. Dan Quayle, one of the most colorful
political figures in United States history, is the subject of a movie that
begins production this fall.
The Farrelly Brothers, who have such comedy classics as Dumb and Dumber and
There’s Something About Mary to their credit, are directing Baked Potatoe, a
spoof about former president George Bush’s vice president. The film will be shot
mainly in Indiana (Quayle’s home state) and Washington D.C.
Quayle is best known for correcting what the vice president thought was a
spelling error made by Mott School sixth grader William Figuroa during a trip to
Trenton, New Jersey. During a spelling bee, Figuroa correctly spelled “potato”
but Quayle believed it was spelled “potatoe” and informed 12 year-old William of
his mistake. Figuroa added the “e” to the end of the word out of politeness.
Quayle has since been the subject of comedians’ jokes for this mistake.
Quayle will be played by Emilio Estevez of Young Guns fame, which is ironic
since his father Martin Sheen plays the president on NBC’s The West Wing.
Figuroa, now 24, will have a cameo in the movie. The rest of the cast will be
hired over the next several months.
This Saturday, there will be a casting call at Indy’s Circle Centre Mall for
young actors to play William Figuroa and his classmates. Representatives from
New Line Studios will be auditioning 11-13 year old boys and girls from 1-5 pm
in the foyer outside Nordstrom Department Store. Anyone interested should report
there by 11:30 am to register. Any prospects chosen by New Line will be given a
second audition in Hollywood in June. There is no cost for participating.
