The
Hoosier Gazette denies any involvement with Dan Rather, falsified National Guard
documents
When the story broke that
Dan Rather used bogus information from falsified National Guard documents about
President Bush’s military service without checking their authenticity on a
recent episode of 60 Minutes, hundreds of HoosierGazette.com readers sent
us e-mails asking if we indeed were the source of said documents.
To put this rumor to rest,
the staff at the Hoosier Gazette would like to officially deny any involvement
with this affair in any way, shape, or form.
We do not have any ties to
Dan Rather, retired National Guard Lt. Col. Bill Burkitt, 60 Minutes
producer Mary Mapes, or any other figure the national news media believes was
involved in the caper designed to hurt President Bush’s popularity prior to the
election.
As a matter of fact, just
being suspected of being a possible source of the fake documents really disgusts
us for two reasons:
1) If the Hoosier Gazette
did decide to falsify a few thirty-year-old documents to manipulate public
opinion, we would take great pains to make sure the documents actually looked
authentic. Unlike Bill Burkitt, the alleged creator of the fake documents, we
at the Hoosier Gazette do our homework; we would find and use an old typewriter
to type the documents, not Microsoft Word. We would also drive far away from
our home office to mail or fax them, not to the nearest Kinkos where they could
be traced back to us in matter of minutes.
2) We at the Hoosier
Gazette can’t stand John Kerry. If we did decide to falsify some documents with
the hopes of screwing up someone’s chances of being elected, we would sabotage
Kerry, who we believe would be a terrible president since he changes his mind
daily on important issues. Like him or not, President Bush makes a decision and
sticks to it.
We hope this clears our
good name so we can get back to what we do best: accurately reporting Indiana’s
news.
