Obese driver involved in third breakfast-related traffic accident this year

            By August Wayne, THG News

May 2, 2005

Evansville---City police officer Mike Leinhart admits he wasn’t surprised to find out who was involved in an accident on the Lloyd Expressway during rush hour Monday morning that caused traffic to back up for over a mile, making many motorists late for work.

It seems Walter Torres struggles to steer his 1977 Monte Carlo while eating his usual morning meal of three McDonald’s breakfast burritos, a steak and egg bagel, three hash browns, and a large Diet Coke.

“He is lucky he hasn’t seriously hurt anyone or himself.  If he keeps this up, no insurance company is going to cover him,” said Officer Leinhart.

According to his statement to police, as he neared the Weinbach Avenue exit in the eastbound lane of the expressway, the steak fell out of Torres’ bagel as he opened the wrapper.  As he reached down to the floorboard to retrieve the steak, the car swerved to the left and hit the concrete median.  The startled Torres then over corrected to the right, causing the car to flip several times.

The 400-plus pound Torres blames an alignment problem with the car for causing the accident.  He was taken to Deaconess Hospital where he is being treated for a concussion and minor cuts and scrapes.

Leinhart also cited Torres in January after he sideswiped another vehicle on the Lloyd Expressway after spilling his soda in his lap.  Another officer cited him in March for running into a parked car on Green River Road after biting down into a blistering-hot hash brown.

Torres stands to lose his license for one year for his third reckless driving offense, a class B misdemeanor.
