You can
tell a lot about the 9th District candidates by their ice cream

As an independent that
lives in Indiana’s 9th Congressional District, I have been trying to make up my
mind the past few months on who would be the best man to represent this part of
the state in the U.S. House of Representatives beginning in 2005.
Should I pick the
smooth-talking and popular incumbent Baron Hill, a Democrat from Seymour who is
in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and who has been in office since 1998?
Or should I choose Hill’s Republican challenger, Mike Sodrel,
a New Albany native and owner and operator of three
businesses headquartered in Jeffersonville that employ over 500 people around
the state: The Free Enterprise System, SOLO Logistics, and Sodrel Truck Lines?
All of my
questions were answered Saturday afternoon in Corydon at the local Dairy Queen.
I was
walking out to my truck after eating a Flamethrower burger, fries, and Coke when
I saw Mike Sodrel pull into the drive through in his black sport utility
vehicle, no doubt on his way to campaign at one of the outdoor events going on
in the area.
Wondering
what kind of ice cream a man like Mr. Sodrel eats, I waited in my truck until he
came out of the
drive thru. To my surprise, he was eating an ICE CREAM SANDWICH!
This speaks
volumes about Sodrel. A wealthy businessman that could afford to eat any ice
cream he wanted: Ben & Jerry’s, Godiva, even Haagen Dazs. Instead he chose
perhaps the most simple and inexpensive of dairy treats—something you might see
the poorest of Hoosiers eating while walking down the street.
This is why
I will be voting Republican for the 9th District this November 2.
Indiana needs representatives like Sodrel—successful business leaders that can
also relate to common man; traits that Sodrel showed me yesterday at Dairy
Queen.
And what
about the favorite ice cream of opponent Baron Hill? Word on the street is when
he decides to splurge and cheat on his diet, he enjoys a delicious Nestle
Drumstick sundae.
What does
this tell me about Hill’s personality? He has a hard shell, is soft in the
middle, and is a bit nutty.
