HoosierGazette.com poll: Gary sucks

            By John LeForest, THG News

In a recent Hoosier Gazette online poll, citizens of Indiana voted the city of Gary the worst place to live in the state.

Gary, a city in northwestern Indiana on Lake Michigan, has around 103,000 inhabitants (2000 census) and is Indiana’s fifth largest city.  It is known for its high crime rate and was once given the title “Murder Capital of America” for having the highest per capita murder rate in the nation.

Gary received a whopping 41% of the total votes for worst place to live.  Terre Haute came in a distant second with 20%, and “Kentuckiana”, or the cities of Clarksville, New Albany, and Jeffersonville near Louisville, Kentucky, received 8% of the vote.

Despite an increase in efforts by Gary officials and law enforcement to curtail the city’s lawless image, most citizens of the state still feel Gary is the by far the worst place to live in the state.

“Gary sucks.  I wouldn’t live there if they paid me,” said Mark Brown of Rolling Prairie.  “I wish we would just give it to Chicago or drop an A-bomb on it to be rid of it.”

No one arguing that Gary was a good place to live could be found for comment.
