Pat Knight to replace Mike Davis as IU basketball coach at season’s end

        By Ross Leslie, THG Sports

Pat Knight, son of coaching legend Bobby Knight, will take over as basketball coach of the Indiana Hoosiers at season’s end.

The rumors of Knight’s hiring started flying when he was seen eating with IU athletic director J. Terry Clapacs at La Charreada, a Mexican restaurant in Bloomington last Friday. The Hoosier Gazette was able to confirm the rumors through a source in the athletic department who wishes to remain anonymous.

Knight played at IU and has been an assistant at Texas Tech for three years, the program Bobby took over after being ousted by former IU athletic director Miles Brand. Pat Knight has also coached at the University of Akron and the now defunct International Basketball League.

Davis, who despite good records at IU and a better showing in the NCAA tournament than Bob Knight had his last few years as coach, has never been able to fill The General’s shoes. His fumbling with the media and apparent lack of confidence have irked Indiana fans since the day he took over as coach. IU is planning on buying out his contract at the end of this season, regardless of the team’s showing in tournament play.

Several Bloomington residents rejoiced at hearing the news of IU’s imminent coaching change.

“Hold hell! I never thought it would happen. If we can’t have The General, at least we got the fruit of his loins!” said exuberant pipe fitter Harold Cates. “Now we can finally return to the glory days of winning national titles!”

“I can’t wait till the day when ol’ Pat launches a chair across floor. It will be like old times,” said Mike Miles. “Assembly Hall is going to be rockin’ once again!”

Both Pat Knight and Mike Davis refused comment. Knight is expected to finish the season as an assistant at Texas Tech before taking over at IU.
